Small, sunny, perfect waves has always been a big part of the wonder and allure of Southern California. Similarly to how Malibu was through the late 40s, 50s and 60s THE place to prove you can rip, Trestles is consolidating its place as the ultimate race-track the world looks at for high performance surfing.
The rights and lefts at Lowers - giving both frontside and backside options; the crispy lips and length of rides groomed by the cobblestones mean its not only about punting airs, sliding turns and busting lips its also about flow and making multiple sections. From Christian Fletcher's approach and aerial announcement of the late 80s, to Kelly Slater's "Black and White" victory at perfect Lowers in 1990, to Shane Beschen's incredible surfing throughout the 90s, to Clay Marzo's perfect 10s in the 2006? NSSA Nationals, to a consistent wave of heavy ripping from Chris Ward to Aaron Cormican to Kolohe Andino's recent assaults, finally to this year's Brazilian destruction, which culminated in youth brigader Miguel Pupo's recent victory at this year's Nike 6.0 WQS... it is clear, absolutely destroying the stage at Lowers is part of the path to international ripping recognition!
Congrats to Miguel Pupo, Tanner Gadauskas, Gabriel Medina, Kolohe Andino, Jadson Andre and the Aerial Brigade at this year's Nike's 6.0 comp. The relaxed yet high-performance surfing legacy of California continues at Lower Trestles... to be continued...
