Legend of Icarus and Big Wave Surfing
The death of Sion Milowsky at Mavericks, this past March took everyone in the big-wave community by surprise. A man so on top of his game, his performances had been amazing for some time now, and his ability to keep pushing it, was inspiring everyone around him. I never actually spoke to him, just shared nods of approval and incentive in his first session at Mavericks November 6th 2010. Had a chance to feel that charging energy he was emiting. He took off on a couple of lefts, was making deep rights... doing his thing! I ended up pushing myself a little extra too... felt great until I got caught inside after a heavy left ate me alive... ended up going through the rocks... all good but was definitely counting my blessings... so that's what we do... we push it to the edge, make it, fall, recover... push it again... and its so hard to perceive if we are pushing too hard... even not being in his close circle, I'd been having a really hard time to come to grips with his passing away... we want to understand why? why him? why did Mother Nature call him after he'd made so many amazing rides... how can we continue to honor his legacy... the legend of Icarus made me understand the beauty of his passing away, the spirit of his actions, the inspiration he left behind... when there are so many senior citizens waiting to die, so many people fearful of that moment of mystery... this spirit that Sion seems to have taped into is everything but fearful. He went down doing what he loved and doing what most mortals only imagine. A tremendous gift to the surfing world - remember Sion.
