The strength of symbolism is an artful form of activism.
Fighting the reality of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch through creative awareness and scientific research: David de Rothschild Plastiki Expedition perfectly exemplifies this critical form of activism. Briefly connected with him at a great talk he lead, at the "(Re)Think The Environmental Self " panel discussion at the University of San Francisco, past April 24. Very conscious form of not only bringing awareness and education, but actively creating stories and experiences. The adventures of the expedition will be blogged and followed. Yet in my opinion, more importantly the content and research of the adventures will be used by Adventure Ecology, a non-profit, founded by David to share these and other adventures with children as a back-drop for teaching important environmental lessons.
Oceanographer Charles Moore ("sad" discoverer of the Garbage Patch) last year built the Junk Raft made of 15,000 plastic bottles and sailed to the Garbage Patch to bring awareness to the existence of it and excessive use of plastic.
Most recently, good friends from Ocean Beach, San Francisco helped Kathleen Egan build a Plastic Wave installation. Another interactive piece that underlines the power of symbolism as activism... check it out: http://vimeo.com/4388424
